The Delhi Airport Ground Support Department (GSD) engaged in a comprehensive fire safety training session conducted by the GMR fire team, Delhi on April 15, 2024. The training focused on educating participants about the different types of fire classes, specifically the five main classes: A, B, C, D, and K. Each class pertains to fires caused by different types of materials and requires specific methods for effective extinguishment. This session provided the GSD team with crucial knowledge on the initiation and prevention of fires, enhancing their preparedness for emergency situations at the airport.

The characteristics of the fire classes are as follows:

1. Class A: This class includes ordinary combustible materials such as wood, paper, textiles, and some types of plastics. Water or foam is used to extinguish these fires.

2. Class B: This includes petroleum products like petrol, diesel, and other flammable liquids. Fires of this kind are extinguished using CO2, dry powder, or foam.

3. Class C: This class is for gaseous fires, such as natural gas or propane. Typically, CO2 or dry powder extinguishers are used to extinguish these fires.

4. Class D: This class is for fires involving metals such as magnesium, titanium, etc. They are extinguished using special dry powder extinguishers.

5. Class K: Specifically, for cooking oils and fats fires. This is used in kitchen fires and extinguished with special wet chemical extinguishers.

Such training helps the GSD team to respond quickly and effectively in various fire situations, which not only protects property but also ensures the safety of lives. This knowledge strengthens the culture of safety at your workplace and increases efficiency in emergencies.
